Sickle Cell Programs and Services in the Commonwealth

• Testing
  Sickle cell screening is offered through local Health Departments in both family planning and maternity clinics. We encourage parents whose newborn has been identified with sickle cell disease or trait to be tested. To see if you qualify for free screening, please contact your local health department.
• Counseling
  Anyone who has had sickle cell screening or whose newborn has been identified with a hemoglobinopathy should receive a copy of his or her test results and offered educational genetic counseling. This process involves the clear communication of all the medical, psychological, social, and genetic factors related to the specific trait being discussed.
• Professional Education and Training
  Training related to education and counseling for sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies is provided through the Virginia Sickle Cell Awareness Program at the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Women's and Infants Health for more information.
  

  New Medical Internet Streaming Videos on Sickle Cell Disease Management

  The NHLBI Pulmonary and Vascular Medicine Branch has produced six new 45-minute lectures on sickle cell disease. The lectures are intended for physician trainees, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers and other ancillary health care workers. The lectures cover vaso-occlusive crisis, acute chest syndrome, hemolysis-associated pulmonary hypertension, genetics of sickle cell disease and thalassemia, pain management, and psychosocial issues. This education project was conducted by Lori Hunter, CRNP and James Nichols,RN. You will need the free Real Player on your PC to watch.

• Newborn Screening
  In Virginia, all babies are screened for sickle cell disease. To obtain a copy of your baby's newborn screening results, contact your baby's doctor.
