REMEMBER “95210” TO IMPROVE YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH
(WISE, Va.) – The LENOWISCO Health District recommends 95210 to help prevent and reduce obesity, increase physical activity and improve the overall health of children. The 95210 message spells out five daily habits to help children (and adults) achieve these goals and live healthier:
“Using 95210 is a great way to communicate simple and consistent ‘good health’ messages to children,” says Shirley Miller, senior health educator, for the LENOWISCO Health District. “Establishing family guidelines for screen time, nutrition and physical activity will help parents and caregivers nurture healthier children, and result in fewer struggles with obesity and related conditions.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthy lifestyles reduce risks for many diseases, including several of the leading causes of premature death: heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. Healthy eating is important for a young person’s growth and development, and establishes patterns that persist into adulthood. Poor diet can lead to energy imbalance (eating more calories than you burn) and can increase risks for being overweight or obese.
“We recommend a diet rich in fruits and vegetables - at least five servings a day - plus whole grains and fat-free or low-fat dairy products for persons aged 2 and up,” says Miller. “Children and adults also should limit their intake of solid fats, cholesterol, sodium, sugars and refined grains.”
