School Health Services

Chesterfield County School Health Services provides public health nursing services to each public school in Chesterfield County.

Services include, but are not limited to:

  • Individual and group health education and counseling.
  • Coordination of care for students with chronic health conditions.
  • Health screenings including hearing, vision, scoliosis and blood pressure.
  • Special school-based immunization programs.
  • Communicable disease investigation and follow-up.

There are 28 Public Health School Nurses who provide services for 62 schools. Each nurse is assigned from one to three schools with each school receiving the services of the public health nurse at least one day per week. The nurse assists students, families and staff with health-related issues. If the nurse is unable to meet the health needs directly, referrals are made to other community resources.

Each public health school nurse has an office at the Health Department and one in their school. The school health nurse’s office at the school is usually separate from the "Clinic.” The nurse may be contacted by students, parents, school staff or other community members through the school or through the health department by calling (804) 748-1633.
