The Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy maintains the Health Workforce Advisory Committee (HWAC) for the Commonwealth. The committee is responsible for the recruitment and retention of providers in under served areas and populations within Virginia. The responsibilities of HWAC include Designating Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs); designating dental, primary care, and mental health professional shortage areas (HPSAs); administering several Virginia scholarship and loan repayment programs; publicizing the functions, programs, and activities of VDH available to assist providers in establishing a practice in under served areas; actively recruiting health care providers, residents, and students to serve in under served areas; identifying and recommending to the Governor and to the General Assembly new programs, activities, and strategies for increasing the number of providers practicing in Virginia's under served areas; and submitting annual reports on the activities and accomplishments of VDH relative to recruiting and retaining providers.
The Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy coordinates its health workforce activities with other state agencies as well as public and private entities and has established partnerships with major healthcare institutions and organizations throughout the Commonwealth.
