What is VIIS?
- VIIS is the acronym for Virginia Immunization Information System, an immunization registry for the state that contains immunization data of persons of all ages
- VIIS is a free, web-based computerized medical record system for immunization data that documents all immunizations a person has received from all medical sources into one definitive, accurate record.
- VIIS is an opt-in registry, but parents/guardians may ask to opt-out of VIIS
- The information about immunization history will be available to all participating heath care providers and school nurses

What is the purpose of VIIS?
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have set a goal that at least 95% of children are adequately immunized against vaccine-preventable diseases.
- An incomplete immunization record is one of the greatest obstacles to this goal.
- A complete and accurate immunization record will eliminate the unnecessary duplication of immunizations that now occurs in 21% of children

- To improve the health of Virginia’s children against vaccine-preventable diseases
- To prevent under/over immunization of children by providing access to a complete and accurate immunization record
- To provide updated recommendations for immunization scheduling using an algorithm to review the client’s immunization history and recommend age-appropriate vaccines
- To reduce staff time needed to obtain complete immunization history of clients
- To produce an official immunization record that serves as ‘Certification of Immunization’ on the school entry form
- To generate parental reminder notices for their child’s due vaccines
- To recall children who received invalid vaccines due to spacing or age
- To allow for recalls in the event of a manufacturing error
- To allow for statewide analysis of immunization patterns to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases
- To provide a mechanism for tracking the distribution of immunizations or prophylactic medications in the event of a public health emergency
