Prescription drugs may be administered to patients by nursing personnel after obtaining a written or verbal order for a specific patient from a physician or nurse practitioner who is authorized to prescribe for that patient. Those drugs which may need to be administered to patients after obtaining a verbal order from a prescriber who is not on the premises may be stored in a secure area outside of the main bulk prescription drug storage area. Keys to this very limited storage area should be restricted to appropriate nursing personnel.
