A zoonosis is an infectious disease that is transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans. The infection may or may not cause illness in the animal. The infection can be transmitted to humans from infected animals either directly (through contact or eating), or indirectly (through invertebrate vectors such as mosquitoes and ticks).
There are numerous zoonotic diseases, many of which can also be transmitted from person-to-person or through food or water.
The zoonoses listed here represent only some of the zoonotic diseases of public health importance.
