ATSDR's Partnership to Promote Localized Efforts to Reduce Environmental Exposures (APPLETREE)
The APPLETREE program is a cooperative agreement between the VDH and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The purpose of our partnership is to examine issues that involve human exposure to hazardous substances in the environment.
We work with communities, ATSDR program staff in Atlanta, ATSDR regional staff in Philadelphia, and many local state and federal agency officials to collect information on contaminated sites in Virginia. Our shared goal is to protect the public from environmental hazards and toxic exposures. If we determine that an exisiting health threat exists, the community is informed immediately. We may also publish a report related to specific hazardous waste site or known chemical release. We determine what type of report to publish based on the specific concern or issue that is reported to us. The types of reports we publish are known as Public Health Assessments (PHAs), Health Consultations (HCs), and Letters of Health Consultation (LHCs).
