Frequently Asked Questions

“Meaningful Use Submissions of Immunization Data
– Frequently Asked Questions

If our facility is currently sending immunization data to VDH, does this meet the meaningful use criteria? Maybe. Transmissions using the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS) flat file format will not meet the meaningful use objective. Facilities currently sending VIIS an HL7 2.3.1 or HL7 2.5.1 messages do meet the meaningful use requirements.

Where can I find specifications for the “meaningful use” immunization message?

Are all health care providers and hospitals asked to submit immunization data? Both hospitals and eligible providers can submit the immunization message to meet a meaningful use objective. VDH also encourages health care providers and hospitals that are not eligible for EHR reimbursement to submit their immunization data using these standard message formats.

Should data transmissions be sent to the central VDH office or to the local health department? All data transmissions should be sent to the VDH central offices. Please contact VDH and we can help you submit your messages.
