Insurance Notice to EMS Instructors

PictureNONAFFILIATED EMS PROVIDERS

Most hospitals in Virginia require liability coverage to the extent of $2,000,000 per occurrence / $6,000,000 aggregate to allow physicians to practice in their hospitals. This is generally the accepted practice for pre-hospital providers as well for liability insurance while performing the required competencies (clinicals).

Therefore EMS providers must be encouraged to purchase, at their own cost, liability insurance that meets the minimum required coverage amounts as established by the medical facility.

AFFILIATED EMS PROVIDERS Volunteer and career providers are generally covered for liability insurance by their agency’s insurance carrier while performing a bonafide training program.

It is imperative that all EMS providers contact their agency’s insurance carrier BEFORE enrolling in any training program to verify that they will indeed be covered by their agency’s policy.

It is recommended that EMS providers seriously consider purchasing additional liability insurance while participating in their educational program.
