How to Maintain your EMS Certification

To maintain your certification in Virginia, EMS providers must complete the state requirements for recertification prior to their certification expiration date. These requirements include:

  1. Completing the required continuing education (CE) credits for their appropriate level of certification.
    • A state approved scan card or OEMS approved electronic data submission MUST be received by the Office of EMS to document your continuing education.  CE records for individual classes/programs must be submitted within 15 days of student attendance.
    • All CE documentation must be received in the Office of EMS prior to the provider expiration date to prevent lapsing into re-entry.
  2. Once all CE credit has been submitted and authenticated by the Office, EMS Providers can access a copy of their Eligibility Letter online 24/7/365 via the EMS Portal.
  3. Register with your Regional EMS Council to take the state certification exam.
  4. Virginia EMS Providers cannot practice without a current Virginia certification card.

For Virginia EMS Providers who are affiliated with a Virginia EMS Agency, the follow option is available:

  • If actively affiliated with an EMS agency, that is licensed to provide care at your current level of certification, your OMD has the option of waiving you from testing.
    1. EMS Providers can access a copy of their Eligibility Letter online 24/7/365 via the EMS Portal.
  • You must present your Eligibility Letter and completed Continuing Education Report to your OMD prior to being exempted from testing.
  • If being waived from testing, you must deliver your valid and completed Virginia EMS Certification Application with your OMD’s signature, date, OMD number and level to be waived to the Office of EMS no later than thirty days past your certification expiration date.  This form must be received by the Office of EMS no later than the last business day of this 30-day grace period.
