Birth records become public information 100 years from the date of the event. Death/Marriage/Divorce records become public information 50 years from the date of the event. For deaths that occur in the city of Virginia Beach, Certified Copies of Death Records can be obtained from the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health. Certified copies are issued to persons eligible to receive them following state regulations. Virginia Beach ONLY issues death certificates for the past five years! Any death record older than five years will have to be secured from the Vital Records office in Richmond.

Effective July 1, 2004 the fee for a vital record increase from $10.00 to $12.00 for each certificate.
