Birth/Death/Marriage/Divorce Records

Birth records become public information 100 years from the date of the event. Death/Marriage/Divorce records become public information 50 years from the date of the event. For deaths that occur in the city of Virginia Beach, Certified Copies of Death Records can be obtained from the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health. Certified copies are issued to persons eligible to receive them following state regulations. Virginia Beach ONLY issues death certificates for the past five years! Any death record older than five years will have to be secured from the Vital Records office in Richmond.

To obtain

1. Office Visit – When you arrive, you will complete an application, pay the $12.00 required fee, must show a valid photo I.D.
2. Mail Request – Mail the completed form VS-6 (Application for Certification of A Vital Record), or include the following information: name of deceased, date of death, place of death, your relationship to deceased, reason for certificate, area code + daytime telephone number and signature. A copy of a photo I.D. must accompany all mail in requests.

Death Certificates are Issued Monday - Friday 8:15a.m. - 4:00p.m.

We Accept Cash, Check payable to Virginia Beach Health Dept., Money Order, Master Card, or Visa

Effective July 1, 2004 the fee for a vital record increase from $10.00 to $12.00 for each certificate.
