Most of the district's services are offered on a sliding fee scale based on a customers income. School-required immunizations are offered free of charge. Health counseling is also free.

Health Services

Maternity Clinic: Operates on a sliding fee scale. The number of patient visits per month will vary as a pregnancy progresses. A Resource Mothers program to offer support for pregnant teens in both counties is provided.

Home Visits: Home visits to high risk maternity clients from the Health Departments or from private doctors is provided to those enrolled in Medicaid's Babycare program.

Family Planning: A family planning clinic, on a sliding scale, is available for men and women at each department. Services include a physical exam, a Pap smear, a check for sexually transmitted diseases, a discussion of birth control and treatment of minor vaginal disorders.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program: The health departments also administer the WIC supplemental food program. WIC is available for financially and nutritionally eligible pregnant women, breast-feeding women and children up to age five. People are asked to call before visiting any department for information on the program.

Immunizations: Other services include immunizations for children, birth to 18 years of age. Those immunizations required for entry into school are free; Hepatitis B vaccines are also free for children born after January 1, 1994. Vaccinations for International travel are provided for a fee.

Communicable Disease: The district offers assistance and refers customers who have been exposed to tuberculosis for chest x-rays, follow-up and medicines as needed. Sexually transmitted diseases can be treated at the clinic, free of charge. Free, confidential HIV testing and counseling is also available. Communicable disease investigations, surveillance and control is a district service.

Family Support Project: A resource for high risk families needing help and support as they take on the responsibility of parenthood is provided within the District. High-risk families are defined as those who have a myriad of family problems and/or inadequate family support systems. Family Resource Project, 757-442-3361.

Health Education: The district also offers community health education services and coordinates a Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Talks and/or presentations on topics such as rabies control, HIV/AIDS prevention, nutrition, weight reduction, smoking cessation, stress management and cancer prevention and early detection are provided through the district for various groups and civic organizations. Environmental Health Services

The Environmental Health section conducts site evaluations and issues permits for septic systems and private wells where conditions allow. Other services include rabies prevention and post-exposure management, environmental assessment of lead hazards, investigation of environmental complaints and follow-up, West Nile Virus surveillance and specimen collection, and correction of violations identified during shoreline surveys conducted by the Division of Shellfish Sanitation. The Environmental Health section also permits and conducts health evaluations at 90 migrant labor camps, more than 80 tourist establishments with monthly evaluations (in season) of tourist establishment swimming pools, and 130 marinas and boat moorings. The Environmental Health section also inspects and permits over 240 food establishments including schools, day care centers, and festival events where food is served. A manager's certification course on food protection practices is offered at least twice a year.
