Medical Services


HIV Testing and Counseling

  • Free confidential testing and counseling by a registered nurse.
  • Anonymous testing sites can be accessed by calling the Virginia Department of Health AIDS Hotline at 1-800-533-4148. 

Pediatric Care

  • Pediatric Services
    Well Child/Preventive Health Maintenance Exams. Case management services are available for high-risk clients. Fees are determined on a sliding scale based on income. The Powhatan Health Department does not provide sick care or acute care for children.
  • Childhood Lead Poisoning
    Free lead testing and counseling for children found to be at risk for lead poisoning. Case management services offered for children with elevated lead levels.
  • Newborn Metabolic Screening
    Follow-up testing for infants found to have abnormal metabolic screenings at birth offered free of charge. Case management or coordination with private medical provider offered.

Women's Health

  • Family Planning, Contraceptive Services and Counseling
    Annual GYN exams for women desiring birth control, and birth control information, are provided at the health department. Norplant, IUD, Depo Provera injections, birth control pills, condoms and other barrier methods are among the contraceptive choices available. Fees are determined on a sliding scale based on income; free or reduced charges are available for low-income clients, Medicaid clients and teenagers under 18 years of age.
  • GYN services are also offered for persons not seeking contraception based on availability of appointments.
  • Maternity Services
    Powhatan prenatal clients receive prenatal care, post-partum care, and case management. Powhatan Health Department is a Medicaid provider for prenatal patients. Fees are determined on a sliding scale based on income.
  • Pregnancy Testing
    Pregnancy testing and counseling are offered free to Medicaid clients and teens aged 18 years and younger; fees for all others. Testing is done Mondays 9 - 10:30 a.m.
