Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease in a population. Applied public health epidemiologists monitor the health and illness of population, investigate the factors that affect the community’s health, and recommend interventions to minimize the risk of disease.
Epidemiology is practiced in health departments daily, with the overall goal of disease prevention and control. In CSHD the practice of applied public health epidemiology involves principles of surveillance, investigation, laboratory testing, data management and communication.
Many data sources are used to monitor diseases and health-related conditions. These data are compiled and analyzed to highlight potential trends or patterns. VDH uses this information to provide guidance in preventing the spread disease. Find more here!
