The Botetourt County Health Department, part of the Alleghany Health District, offers a variety of programs and health services to enhance the health of the county’s citizens. Public health nurses, environmental health specialists and office support staff are dedicated to the mission of promoting optimum health, preventing disease and protecting the health of the community.
Clinical services include family planning services, pregnancy testing and counseling, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. The health department also offers an extensive immunization program which includes free routine child and adult immunizations (including flu vaccine). Many of the services are offered free or fees are sliding scale according to income and family size.
In addition, the health department offers the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, a nutrition program for eligible pregnant, post-partum and breastfeeding women, infants and young children. In the BabyCare program, public health nurses provide nursing case management services, including home visits and follow-up for pregnant women and children up to age two. The department also administers a car seat program for the Virginia Department of Health to provide education and a car seat to families who meet eligibility guidelines. Vital statistic information for births and deaths are filed through the health department.
The environmental health programs include food establishment inspections, rabies prevention, sewage and water permits and complaint investigations. Both nurses and environmental health specialists work together to investigate communicable diseases, including outbreaks. The health department staff also provides community health education, conducts immunization assessments in schools and day care centers and participates in a variety of community activities and partnerships.

The Clifton Forge Health Department is closed on Mondays and Fridays. The varied hours are on 1st Tuesdays of the month, 8:00AM - 12:00PM, 4th Tuesdays of the month, 8:00AM – 3:30PM, and every Thursday, 8:30AM – 3:00PM. Special clinics are advertised in the Roanoke Times newspaper. Our clinic services are provided based on family income and a sliding fee scale and/or at no cost to our customers.
