Welcome to the VDH Web pages dedicated to providing support and information to reporters of sentinel data for influenza surveillance. Sentinel reporting for influenza began the week of October 7, 2012. Sentinel sites are required to send two specimens per month from patients meeting the case definition for influenza-like illness:

Did you know...

  • In 2011 over 800 Virginians were hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of influenza; the average length of hospital stay was 4 days.  These hospitalizations accounted for approximately $16.3 million in health care utilization costs.

  • The CDC estimates that during the 2011-12 influenza season only about 46% of Virginians received an influenza vaccine.
