Congratulations to W. Austin Spruill, MD, a pediatrician in Roanoke, Va. Dr. Spruill is this year’s CDC Childhood Immunization Champion for Virginia. Dr. Spruill has been a pediatrician in Roanoke Virginia since 1990 and has been an advocate for childhood immunizations and a leader among physicians in the community for vaccine education throughout his career. Dr. Spruill led an internal effort within his pediatric group, Physicians to Children, to establish and implement a vaccination policy that focuses on the education of parents and caregivers by providing scientifically sound medical information about the efficacy and safety of vaccines. After receiving this information, parents or caregivers opting to delay immunizations for their children are asked to transfer to other providers.
Since the implementation of this policy at Physicians to Children, few parents have left the practice and the number of new patients presenting to the practice has exceeded the number who left. The end result has been more children in the Roanoke area have received or are receiving all recommended vaccines. For more information about the awards and a list of recipients, click here.
Champions are nominated by the Vaccines for Children staff for excellent in immunization practices. To discover who the current Immunization Champion is, click here.
