Division of Immunization

James B. Farrell, Director

The Division of Immunization has as its mission the reduction of morbidity and mortality associated with vaccine preventable diseases.

Thank you to those of you who have pre-registered your facility to be an H1N1 vaccination site.  Over 2,900 facilities have pre-registered as H1N1 vaccination sites.  Pre-registered sites will soon be receiving an email outlining steps to complete the registration process.  It is now time to officially register. If you have not Pre-Registered, you can still register to become a vaccination site.

Programs in the Division of Immunization

Vaccines for Children (VFC)
VFC provides most vaccines at no charge to enrolled public and private providers for eligible children. Purchasing vaccine through federal contracts at lower prices reduces vaccine cost as a barrier to vaccination and keeps children in their medical homes for comprehensive health care.

Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention (VPHBP)
In collaboration with local health departments and private providers, VPHBP identifies and provides services to hepatitis B surface antigen positive pregnant women and their infants, their household contacts, and sexual partners.

Disease Surveillance
Disease surveillance is a collaborative effort among private providers, schools, and state and local health departments to investigate occurrences of vaccine - preventable diseases (VPD). Timely reporting of VPD morbidity helps identify factors that may help prevent the spread of illness.

Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS)
Virginia Immunization Information System, also known as VIIS, is Virginia’s statewide immunization registry for both the private and the public sectors.  It is a free, web-based system that consolidates vaccination records from multiple providers into one record.  VIIS is now available to health care professionals throughout the state.
