Why is Syphilis Elimination important?

Across the country, the incidence of syphilis is at an all time low. However, in southern states such as Virginia, syphilis rates remain extremely high.

Syphilis also occurs in cycles. Now, while it's at an all time low, is the best opportunity to eliminate it from the United States. The elimination of syphilis will also improve infant health and decrease the spread of HIV infection.

How can Syphilis be eliminated?

The Division has adopted five key strategies for Syphilis Elimination from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For the following strategies, the Virginia Epidemiology Response Team (VERT) was created:
