Foodborne diseases are caused by various “bad bugs”, otherwise refered to as pathogens.  Included among the types of different pathogens are bacteria, viruses and parasites.  Below is a list of  foodborne diseases, divided by pathogen type:

Per state law (Section 32.1-36 of the Code of Virginia and 12 VAC 5-90-80 and 12 VAC 5-90-90 of the Board of Health Regulations for Disease Reporting and Control – www.vdh.virginia.gov/epi/regs.asp), all outbreaks, including those that are foodborne, are reportable in Virginia.
